What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
Albania's land border crossings, neighbour by neighbour:
With Montenegro: Hani i Hotit on the Shkoder — Podgorica road and Muriqan near the coast.
With Kosovo: Morina, on the road to Pristina.
With North Macedonia: Qafe Thane by Lake Ohrid and Gorna Belica.
With Greece: Kakavia on the road to Ioannina and Kristallopigi.
Coming in from Montenegro or North Macedonia is the simplest way to arrive overland.
By sea — ferries to Italy: Durres — Bari and Vlore — Brindisi. This is an exit into the Schengen area with full border control.
You can drive in from Montenegro or North Macedonia.
A Green Card is required, and its validity for Albania is checked separately: the insurance is often bought right at the border.
How long the car may stay in the country is stated when you import it into Albania. Check with customs in advance: the time limits get revised.
Mountain roads are narrow and winding, and the markings are patchy in places.
An International Driving Permit is needed only if your licence was issued outside the EU and the EEA; a licence from an EU or EEA country is valid as it is.
A microchip is required for identification.
The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.
An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country of departure.
Agree the vaccinations and any quarantine on entry to Albania with the local veterinary service in advance — before you buy the tickets.
The fine accrues for every day over the limit and is paid on departure.
The fine is calculated when you leave, and you only learn the figure at passport control. There is no way to find it out inside Albania in advance: the rates are revised and the reference sources disagree. Set aside cash and time.
An entry ban applies in the case of a substantial overstay.
Counting your stay needs particular care if you entered on a Schengen visa — it is limited by that visa's validity, not by a separate Albanian permission.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
