Algeria's land border crossings, neighbour by neighbour:

The border with Morocco has been closed since 1994. There is no through traffic, and an overland route across the Maghreb from Morocco into Algeria cannot be put together - this is the main constraint of the region.

With Tunisia: Babouch near Ain Draham in the north and Hazoua in the south near Tozeur. This is the only direction that works for a tourist.

With Libya, Niger, Mali and Mauritania crossings exist, but these are difficult areas and there are no tourist routes through them.

Algeria is the largest country in Africa by area, and the distances between crossings are measured in thousands of kilometres.

By sea there are ferries to France and Spain from Algiers and Oran.

Bringing a car into Algeria

You cannot drive in from Morocco - the border has been closed since 1994.

The realistic options are a ferry from Europe or entry from the Tunisian side.

Check Algeria's temporary import rules with its customs service, not by the experience of a neighbouring country: the time limits and the carnet requirement do not match.

Insurance has to be bought locally.

An International Driving Permit is required.

Trips into the Sahara require an escort and separate permits.

Travelling to Algeria with a pet

An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.

The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

An import permit is arranged in advance.

Check the requirements for bringing an animal into Algeria before you buy tickets, not after. Vaccination deadlines and quarantine rules change, and they cannot be redone in a day.

Overstaying your visa in Algeria

A fine is charged for exceeding the term of the visa.

You will learn the figure at the border, not before. Rates in Algeria get revised and reference sources do not keep up: take cash and allow time for the departure.

The consequences go beyond money: a significant overstay brings detention and deportation.

Extensions are arranged in advance at the police station for the place where you are staying.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
