What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
Angola's land border crossings, neighbour by neighbour:
With Namibia: Santa Clara - Oshikango in the south, the main crossing.
With the DR Congo: Luau - Dilolo in the east and the crossings near Cabinda.
With Zambia: Jimbe in the south-east.
With the Republic of the Congo the border runs along the Cabinda exclave.
Cabinda is a story of its own: this province is cut off from the rest of Angola by DR Congo territory, and the only way to reach it overland is through Congolese territory, crossing two borders.
The main way in is 4 de Fevereiro International Airport in Luanda.
Traffic drives on the right.
Check how long a car is allowed to stay in Angola, and the question of a carnet, case by case. The rules change, and a general figure for the region will not help here.
Insurance has to be bought locally, at the border.
An International Driving Permit is required.
An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.
The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.
An import permit is arranged in advance with the veterinary service.
Check the list of documents for bringing an animal into Angola with the country's veterinary service, and put the same question to your carrier. Any missing item is enough to be refused.
A fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid when you leave.
Exactly how much will be decided on departure. The amount cannot be confirmed in advance in Angola; the rates change. Carry cash and do not book a tight connection.
Extensions are arranged in advance, before your stay runs out.
A serious overstay means deportation and an entry ban.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
