Bahrain is an island, and it has a single land link.

The King Fahd Causeway is a built-up causeway about 25 kilometres long connecting Bahrain with Saudi Arabia. It is the country's only land crossing.

All the road traffic goes over the causeway, and at weekends and on public holidays queues build up there: the route is popular with residents of the Saudi Eastern Province.

Everything else is by air and sea. The main flow goes through Manama airport.

There is no land link with Qatar, although the countries lie close to each other: a bridge between them has been discussed but never built.

Driving to Bahrain

The only land entry is over the King Fahd Causeway from the Saudi Arabian side. That means driving to Bahrain under your own steam requires legally crossing Saudi territory first.

Check the rules on temporarily importing a car into Bahrain with customs. They change, and general figures do not carry over here.

Insurance is bought locally.

An International Driving Permit is required.

Travelling to Bahrain with a pet

An import permit is required, arranged in advance.

An international-standard microchip is compulsory.

The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

The veterinary certificate is endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.

Certain dog breeds are banned from import.

Check the vaccination and test timings for bringing an animal into Bahrain with the veterinary service in your country before buying tickets.

Overstaying your visa in Bahrain

A fine is charged for every day beyond the visa period and is paid on departure.

The fine is calculated as you leave, and you will learn the figure at passport control. You cannot find it out in advance in Bahrain: the rates are revised and the guidebooks disagree. Allow for cash and for time.

Extending the visa is cheaper than overstaying, and you have to apply before it expires.

A serious overstay can mean deportation and an entry ban.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
