What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
Belize's land border crossings, listed by the neighbours it shares a border with:
With Mexico: Subteniente Lopez - Chetumal in the north, the only vehicle crossing and the country's main gateway.
With Guatemala: Benque Viejo - Melchor de Mencos in the west, the road to Tikal.
Leaving Belize costs money - the fee is collected in cash at both land crossings.
By sea, there are boats to Guatemala and Honduras from Punta Gorda and Dangriga.
The main way in is Philip Goldson International Airport just outside Belize City.
Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye are islands reached by boat or light aircraft with no border formalities.
Land routes work with Mexico and Guatemala.
Temporary import is processed at the border, and a note is entered in your documents: you will not get out of the country without having it closed.
Insurance is compulsory and has to be bought locally, right at the crossing.
Ask customs how long a car is admitted into Belize for. The figure changes, and general data cannot be relied on.
An International Driving Permit is required.
A Mexican SAE permit will not help you here: by entering Belize you are leaving Mexico, and you will not get back in on a single-entry permit.
An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.
A rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.
An import permit is arranged in advance.
Ask the country's veterinary service for the list of documents needed to bring an animal into Belize, and put the same question to your carrier. Any missing item is enough to be refused.
A fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid on departure.
Exactly how much will be determined as you leave. The sum cannot be confirmed in Belize in advance, as the rates change. Keep cash on you and do not book a tight connection.
An extension is arranged in advance, before your permitted stay expires.
A serious overstay means deportation and an entry ban.
What counts is a rolling window over six months, not a single trip.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
