The Central African Republic's land border crossings, neighbour by neighbour:

With Cameroon: Garoua-Boulai in the west. This is the country's main supply channel: almost all imports come along the road from the Cameroonian port of Douala.

With the Republic of the Congo: Betou in the south.

With DR Congo: ferry crossings over the Ubangi River near Bangui.

With Chad, Sudan and South Sudan the crossings run through areas affected by conflict.

There is no sea coast, and the country depends entirely on the Cameroonian corridor.

The main way in is Bangui M'Poko International Airport.

Driving to the Central African Republic

Ask customs about the temporary import rules, not a neighbouring country's experience: time limits and the carnet requirement differ.

Insurance is taken out locally.

An International Driving Permit is required.

Travel outside the capital carries a direct risk to life.

Travelling to the Central African Republic with a pet

You need an international veterinary certificate, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.

The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

An import permit is arranged in advance.

Check the requirements for the animal before you buy tickets, not after. Vaccination deadlines and quarantine rules change, and there is no redoing them in a day.

When the situation is unstable the veterinary services work erratically, and the paperwork takes an unpredictable amount of time.

Overstaying your visa in the Central African Republic

A fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid on departure.

You learn the figure at the border, not before. Rates here are revised and the reference sources lag behind: take cash and allow time for the exit.

When the situation is unstable an overstay is riskier than usual: document checks are more frequent, the consequences less predictable.

Extensions are arranged in advance, before your stay runs out.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
