What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
Chad's land border crossings, neighbour by neighbour:
With Cameroon: N'Djamena - Kousseri, over the bridge across the Logone River. Chad's capital stands right on the border, and the crossing takes minutes.
With Niger: Nguigmi in the west, by Lake Chad.
With Nigeria: the links run around Lake Chad; the route is unsafe.
With Sudan: Adre in the east. This direction is affected by the Sudanese conflict.
With Libya and the Central African Republic the crossings run through desert areas with little control.
There is no sea coast, and supplies come through the Cameroonian port of Douala.
The main way in is N'Djamena International Airport, which shares its runway with a military base.
Ask directly about the period for which a car is let into Chad and about the carnet. The rules change, and a general figure for the region will not help here.
Insurance is taken out locally.
An International Driving Permit is required.
Routes away from the main directions cross the desert and require an escort.
You need an international veterinary certificate, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.
The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.
An import permit is arranged in advance.
Get the list of documents for bringing an animal into Chad from the country's veterinary service and put the same question to your carrier. Any missing item is enough to stop you.
When the situation is unstable the veterinary services work erratically, and the paperwork takes an unpredictable amount of time.
A fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid on departure.
Exactly how much will be decided as you leave. The sum cannot be confirmed in advance in Chad, as the rates change. Keep cash on you and do not book a tight connection.
When the situation is unstable an overstay is more dangerous than usual: document checks are more frequent and the consequences less predictable.
Extensions are arranged in advance, before your permitted stay runs out.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
