What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
Chile's land border crossings, listed by neighbour:
With Argentina there are more crossings than anywhere else; the main one is Los Libertadores, also known as Cristo Redentor, on the Santiago — Mendoza road. Further south, Cardenal Samore near Osorno is open, along with the Patagonian crossings towards El Chalten and Torres del Paine.
With Peru: Chacalluta — Santa Rosa on the Arica — Tacna road.
With Bolivia: Chungara — Tambo Quemado at over four thousand metres.
Andean crossings are closed when the weather turns. Los Libertadores is regularly shut during winter snowfalls, and that is worth taking into account when planning.
Biosecurity control on entry is strict: bringing in food, fruit and seeds is restricted, and everyone fills in a declaration.
Land routes are well developed, especially the link with Argentina.
Ask customs about the rules for temporary import into Chile rather than going by experience in a neighbouring country: the permitted periods and the carnet requirement do not match.
A rental car can be taken across the border only with the rental company's permission, arranged in advance — on the Argentine route this is checked.
An International Driving Permit is required.
Insurance is bought locally.
An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.
The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.
Parasite treatment is recorded in the documents.
On arrival the animal is inspected by the SAG service.
Ask your country's veterinary service what is needed in terms of vaccinations and quarantine for entry into Chile before you book tickets.
The fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid on departure.
You will learn the figure at the border, not before. The rates in Chile are revised and the reference guides do not keep up: take cash and allow extra time for leaving.
An extension at the immigration service is cheaper, and it is arranged before the permitted stay expires.
A lost immigration card makes leaving harder.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
