Cuba is an island and has no land borders with other states. All entry is by air and by sea.

The main flow goes through Jose Marti airport in Havana, while resort flights are handled by Varadero, Holguin, Cayo Coco and Santa Clara.

The only land line on the island is the perimeter of the Guantanamo base. That is territory under US control, it is closed, and it has nothing to do with tourism.

Travel between the islands and resorts is by domestic flights and by road, with no separate border formalities inside the country.

Bringing a car into Cuba

You cannot reach Cuba under your own steam - the island has no land borders.

Cars are brought to the island by sea, and that is a procedure in its own right, not a tourist scenario.

Ask the local customs service about the conditions for importing a car. The rules of neighbouring countries do not work here.

Tourists get around in rental cars, and these are booked in advance: the fleet on the island is small and in high season nothing is left free.

Travelling to Cuba with a pet

A veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.

A rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

On arrival the animal is inspected by veterinary control at the airport.

Confirm vaccination timings, microchipping and quarantine rules for import with the airline before you buy tickets.

Overstaying your visa in Cuba

A fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid on the spot.

The exact sum will be named by the officer on departure. The rates have changed more than once and figures from reference sources cannot be relied on - take plenty of cash to the border.

An extension is cheaper than an overstay: you need to apply to the migration service before the first ninety days are up.

A lost migration card complicates departure - its second half is needed when you fly out.

What else to check before you go

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
