Cyprus is an island and has no land borders with other states.

But inside the island there is a dividing line between the southern part and the north, which is controlled by the Turkish side. Checkpoints operate across it — in Nicosia on Ledra Street and at Agios Dometios, as well as several outside the capital.

Entry to the island is recognised only through the southern ports and airports — Larnaca and Paphos. Flying into the northern part via Turkey is treated by the southern side as illegal entry.

This is a practical constraint: you can get to the north from the south, whereas the reverse order creates problems.

By sea — ferries and cruise ships at Limassol.

Bringing a car into Cyprus

You cannot drive to the island under your own steam — there are no land borders, and cars are brought in by sea.

Traffic drives on the left — a rarity for Europe, and the main thing to get used to.

A rental car usually may not be taken across the dividing line without separate insurance, which is issued at the crossing.

An International Driving Permit is needed only if your licence was issued outside the EU and the EEA; a licence from an EU or EEA country is valid as it is.

Ask customs how long a car is allowed to stay. The figure changes, and general data cannot be relied on.

Travelling to Cyprus with a pet

The rules are the common EU ones.

An ISO-standard microchip is mandatory, fitted before the rabies vaccination.

The rabies vaccination — plus a 21-day wait before entry.

Animals arriving from certain countries outside the EU also need a rabies antibody test, with a three-month wait.

An EU veterinary certificate is required.

No more than five animals per person.

Overstaying your visa in Cyprus

A fine accrues for every day beyond your permitted stay and is paid on departure.

Exactly how much will be determined on departure. The amount cannot be confirmed in advance, and rates change. Keep cash on you and do not book a tight connection.

An entry ban is applied in the case of a substantial overstay.

A breach in Cyprus does not automatically go into the Schengen system, but countries exchange data, and it does affect an EU visa.

What else to check before you go

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
