DR Congo's land border crossings, neighbour by neighbour:

With the Republic of the Congo: the Kinshasa - Brazzaville ferry across the Congo River.

With Rwanda: Grande Barriere in Goma and Ruzizi near Bukavu. Whether they work depends on the situation in the east.

With Uganda: Kasindi - Mpondwe and Bunagana.

With Zambia: Kasumbalesa in the south, the key crossing of the Copperbelt.

With Angola: Dilolo - Luau in the south-west.

With Burundi, Tanzania, South Sudan and the Central African Republic the links run across lakes and along roads that are hard to travel.

There are nine neighbours - more than any other country in Africa, but there is almost no road network between the regions: the country is the size of Western Europe, and you cannot cross it overland.

The main way in is N'djili International Airport in Kinshasa.

Driving to DR Congo

Traffic drives on the right.

Ask customs directly about the carnet and the temporary import period for DR Congo. The rules are revised, and what holds true for the neighbours may not work here.

Insurance is taken out locally, and bought at the border.

An International Driving Permit is required.

You cannot plan a driving route around the country: there are essentially no roads between the regions, and people travel by plane and by river.

Travelling to DR Congo with a pet

You need an international veterinary certificate, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.

The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

An import permit is arranged in advance with the veterinary service.

The exact list for DR Congo comes from the country's veterinary service, and the carrier will add rules of its own. Ask both: without the full set of documents the animal will not be taken on board.

Overstaying your visa in DR Congo

A fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid on departure.

The fine is counted as you leave, and you will learn the figure at passport control. There is no finding it out in DR Congo in advance: the rates are revised and the reference sources disagree. Allow for cash and for time.

Extensions are arranged in advance, before your permitted stay runs out.

A serious overstay means deportation and an entry ban.

What else to check before you go

更新日

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
