Egypt's land border crossings, neighbour by neighbour:

With Israel: Taba, the only crossing open to tourists. It has been working since 1982 and links Taba in Egypt with Eilat in Israel.

With Libya: Sallum on the Mediterranean coast. It mainly serves Libyans and Egyptians.

With Sudan: Argeen and Qustul. Overland traffic has been disrupted by the civil war in Sudan.

With the Gaza Strip: Rafah, which operates irregularly.

The fee at Taba has tripled. Since 18 March 2026 entering Egypt through this crossing costs $60 instead of the previous $25. For a family the difference at the border is noticeable.

To Jordan by sea, by ferry. Arab Bridge Maritime sails from Nuweiba and Taba to Aqaba. This route lets you reach Jordan without going through Israel and the extra procedures and fees that come with it.

Bringing a car into Egypt

A carnet de passage is compulsory. Without this customs document a car will not be let across the border.

And it has to be arranged in advance, at home. You cannot buy a temporary import permit once you are inside Egypt - this is the place where travellers get stuck at the border with the route ready and the paperwork not.

Bringing a passenger car in through Taba costs a separate $50 on top of the visa fee.

Border fees are paid in cash US dollars. It is worth having them ready before you reach the terminal.

Check the licence and insurance requirements with the customs service of the country you are entering.

Travelling to Egypt with a pet

An ISO-standard microchip is compulsory.

The rabies vaccination is given no later than 30 days before entry.

The veterinary certificate is needed as an original, stamped by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.

Dogs need vaccinations against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and parainfluenza.

Cats need them against rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia.

On arrival the animal is examined by a vet from Egypt's Ministry of Agriculture right at the border, so the original documents must be with you and not in your checked luggage.

Overstaying your visa in Egypt

The sources disagree on the amount of the fine. The Russian embassy gives 1520 pounds for the first three months of overstay and 500 pounds for each further three months, as of May 2025. A 2026 source gives 7020 pounds for those same first three months. Neither of them cites the article of the law, so it is safer to budget for the larger sum.

Payment is made on departure, in cash Egyptian pounds. You will have to change money in advance, and it is better to reach the airport with time to spare.

A serious overstay can mean arrest and deportation at your own expense, not just a fine.

Extending is cheaper than overstaying. Two extra months at the Gawazat office cost nothing if you apply before the first month is up.

What else to check before you go

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
