What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
Fiji is an archipelago of hundreds of islands and has no land borders.
The main way in is Nadi Airport on the island of Viti Levu; Suva handles regional flights.
By sea it is the port of Lautoka and the cruise berths.
Ferries and light aircraft run between the islands, with no border formalities inside the country.
Fiji is a major transit hub for Oceania, with flights from here to Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga and New Zealand.
You cannot drive to the islands overland — there are no land borders.
Tourists get around in rental cars on Viti Levu, which has a ring road.
Traffic drives on the left.
A licence in English is accepted; in any other language you need an official translation, and an International Driving Permit is the form rental desks recognise.
Check the temporary import rules with customs. They change, and general figures from elsewhere do not carry over to Fiji.
The rules are strict, as the islands protect their own ecosystem.
The import permit is arranged in advance, and the requirements depend on the country the animal is coming from.
Quarantine is applied.
Find out the import requirements and timescales well before the trip: the paperwork for an animal takes weeks.
A fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid on departure.
The amount will only be quoted to you at the border. The rates change and there is no way to work the sum out in advance — keep a cash reserve for the day you leave.
A two-month extension is arranged in advance, before the four months run out.
A serious overstay means deportation and an entry ban.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
