Ghana's land border crossings, neighbour by neighbour:

With Togo: Aflao–Lome on the coast, the main and busiest crossing in the region: the Togolese capital stands right on the border.

With Cote d'Ivoire: Elubo–Noe on the coast and Samboya inland.

With Burkina Faso: Paga–Dakola in the north. The route is complicated by the situation on the Burkinabe side.

Aflao is a rare case where a neighbouring country's capital begins immediately beyond the barrier: people travel from Accra to Lome as if to a suburb.

The main way in is Kotoka International Airport in Accra.

Driving to Ghana

Temporary import into Ghana is handled under local rules, and those are different in every country and keep changing: find out the period and the carnet requirement in advance.

Insurance is bought locally, at the border.

An International Driving Permit is required.

Traffic police are active on the highways, and documents are checked often.

Travelling to Ghana with a pet

An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.

A rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

An import permit is arranged in advance with the veterinary service.

Check the vaccination, microchip and quarantine requirements for bringing an animal into Ghana with the airline before you buy the tickets.

Overstaying your visa in Ghana

A fine is charged for exceeding the term of your visa and is paid on departure.

The amount is calculated at the moment you leave. The published rates in Ghana contradict one another and go out of date — count on cash and an extra hour at the border.

Extensions are arranged in advance, before your permitted stay runs out.

A serious overstay means detention and deportation at your own expense.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
