What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
Guatemala's land border crossings, listed by neighbour:
With Mexico: Tecun Uman - Ciudad Hidalgo on the Pacific side, La Mesilla - Ciudad Cuauhtemoc in the mountains, El Ceibo in the north of Peten.
With Belize: Melchor de Mencos, on the road from Tikal to the coast.
With Honduras: El Florido by the ruins of Copan, Agua Caliente, Corinto.
With El Salvador: Pedro de Alvarado, Valle Nuevo, San Cristobal.
The borders with Honduras and El Salvador are internal to the CA-4 zone, stamps are issued there, but the day count is shared.
The Mexican direction is an external border of the zone, and leaving that way resets the ninety days.
Land routes are open with every neighbour - the country lies on the Pan-American Highway.
Temporary import is processed at the border, and the record is entered in your documents: you will not be able to leave without closing it.
Ask customs how long a car is allowed to stay in Guatemala. The figure changes, and general information cannot be relied on.
Insurance has to be bought locally.
An International Driving Permit is required.
Inside the CA-4 zone a car may be moved freely, but the paperwork is still done at every border.
An import permit is required, arranged in advance with the veterinary service.
A rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.
An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.
Confirm vaccination timings, the microchip and quarantine for import into Guatemala before you buy tickets - the carrier will not let the animal on board without the full set of papers.
A fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid on departure.
Exactly how much will be determined when you leave. The amount cannot be confirmed in advance in Guatemala, the tariffs change. Keep cash on you and do not book a tight connection.
Extensions are arranged at the immigration service before your stay expires, not after.
A serious overstay means deportation and an entry ban.
You have to count the whole CA-4 zone, not the days spent in one country.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
