What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
Guinea-Bissau's land border crossings, neighbour by neighbour:
With Senegal: Sao Domingos–Mpack in the north, on the road to Casamance.
With Guinea: Kebo and Gabu in the east.
There are only two neighbours, and land routes are few.
The Bijagos Archipelago is the main natural attraction; you get there by boat from Bissau, and there are no separate border formalities.
The main way in is Osvaldo Vieira International Airport in Bissau; there are few flights, and most go via Lisbon and Dakar.
Find out the temporary import rules for Guinea-Bissau from customs, not from experience in the neighbouring country: the periods and the carnet requirement do not match.
Insurance is bought locally, at the border.
An International Driving Permit is required.
Traffic police are active on the highways, and documents are checked often.
An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.
A rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.
An import permit is arranged in advance with the veterinary service.
Before bringing an animal into Guinea-Bissau, check the vaccinations, the microchip and quarantine with your carrier — its list decides whether the animal is allowed on board.
A fine is charged for exceeding the term of your visa and is paid on departure.
You will learn the figure at the border, not before. The rates in Guinea-Bissau are revised and the reference sources do not keep up: take cash and allow time for the departure.
Extensions are arranged in advance, before your permitted stay runs out.
A serious overstay means detention and deportation at your own expense.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
