What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
There is a single land border - with Northern Ireland, that is, with the United Kingdom.
There is no border control on it: the Common Travel Area applies and no physical border exists. But each side needs its own visa, and checks happen inside the country rather than at the border.
By sea there are ferries to the United Kingdom and France: Dublin - Holyhead, Rosslare - Cherbourg and Roscoff.
The main flow comes through Dublin airport, which also has US preclearance: passengers on flights to the United States complete immigration formalities while still in Ireland.
Crossing the border with Northern Ireland unnoticed is easy, and that is precisely why violations come to light later, during a document check.
You can get there by ferry or overland from Northern Ireland.
Traffic drives on the left.
A Green Card is compulsory for foreign-registered vehicles.
Check the maximum period of temporary import into Ireland before you set off. It has changed, and relying on old information is risky.
The roads are narrow, especially on the west coast, and there is a reason rental cars here tend to be on the small side.
The rules are close to the common European ones, but stricter about the route.
An ISO-standard microchip is compulsory, implanted before the rabies vaccination.
Rabies vaccination - and a 21-day wait before entry.
Dogs must be treated against echinococcus 24 to 120 hours before arrival.
Entry is only possible by approved routes and with approved carriers.
A rabies antibody titre test is required only for pets from a country not on the EU's approved list. The US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK are on the list, so this does not apply to pets travelling from those countries; Russia is one of the countries it does apply to. A waiting period then applies before entry.
An overstay comes to light during a document check or on departure.
The main consequence is deportation and an entry ban.
In Ireland the amount of the fine is quoted at the border on departure. There is no way to find it out in advance - keep a reserve of cash for the way out.
A record of the violation also spoils your history for British visas: the countries exchange data within the Common Travel Area.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
