Kenya's land border crossings, neighbour by neighbour:

With Tanzania: Namanga on the Nairobi–Arusha road, the main one for tourists; Isebania in the west; Taveta–Holili near Kilimanjaro.

With Uganda: Malaba and Busia, both on the Nairobi–Kampala road.

With Ethiopia: Moyale in the north.

With South Sudan: Nadapal.

The border with Somalia is closed for security reasons.

Namanga is the key hub of the safari routes: the flow between the Kenyan and Tanzanian parks goes through it, and the eTA for coming back in has to be arranged in advance.

Driving to Kenya

Land routes are open with Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia.

Check the period for which a car is allowed into Kenya, and the carnet question, case by case. The rules change, and a general figure for the region will not help here.

Traffic drives on the left.

An International Driving Permit is required.

Insurance is bought locally, or as a regional COMESA policy, which is valid in several East African countries at once.

Travelling to Kenya with a pet

An import permit is required, arranged in advance with the veterinary service.

A microchip to the international standard is required.

A rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

An international veterinary certificate is required.

Check the vaccination timings and the quarantine rules for bringing an animal into Kenya with your country's veterinary service before you buy the tickets.

Overstaying your visa in Kenya

A fine is charged for every day of the overstay.

Exactly how much will be decided when you leave. The amount cannot be confirmed in advance in Kenya, as the rates change. Keep cash on you and do not book a tight connection.

Extensions are arranged in advance, before the eTA runs out.

A serious overstay means deportation and an entry ban.

What else to check before you go

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
