Kosovo's land border crossings, listed by the neighbours it shares a border with:

With Albania: Morina, on the Pristina - Durres road.

With North Macedonia: Hani i Elezit in the south, on the road to Skopje.

With Montenegro: Kulla in the west.

With Serbia: Merdare, Jarinje and Brnjak. This direction is a special case: Serbia does not recognise Kosovo's independence and may not treat entry from Kosovo as lawful.

The key rule for planning your route: if you entered Kosovo from somewhere other than Serbia, the Serbian side may regard it as illegal entry into the country. The safe approach is to enter Kosovo from Serbia and return the same way.

The main point of entry is Pristina international airport.

Bringing a car into Kosovo

The land routes work with all the neighbours, but the Serbian direction needs care about the order in which you enter.

Insurance is bought at the border - a Green Card does not always cover Kosovo, and the policy is issued on the spot.

Ask customs directly about the period of temporary import into Kosovo. General figures go out of date faster than reference books update them.

An International Driving Permit is required.

Vehicle number plates are a sensitive subject in the north of the country, and that is worth bearing in mind there.

Travelling to Kosovo with a pet

An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.

The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

An import permit is arranged in advance.

Before bringing an animal into Kosovo, check with two authorities: the country's veterinary service and your carrier. Either of the two lists can keep you out.

Overstaying your visa in Kosovo

A fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid on departure.

The amount is calculated at the moment of departure. The published rates for Kosovo contradict each other and go out of date - count on cash and an extra hour at the border.

An extension is arranged in advance, before your permitted stay runs out.

A serious overstay means deportation and an entry ban.

What else to check before you go

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
