Kyrgyzstan's land border crossings, grouped by the neighbour they lead to:

With Kazakhstan: Ak-Zhol - Korday, the main one on the Bishkek - Almaty highway; also Chaldovar and Karkyra on the Issyk-Kul route.
With Uzbekistan: Dostuk near Osh, the main way out into the Fergana Valley.
With Tajikistan: Bor-Dobo and Kyzyl-Bel on the Pamir Highway.
With China: Irkeshtam and Torugart, both high in the mountains.

The border with Tajikistan is worth checking before you set off. It was closed after the border conflict of 2021 and only opened again after the delimitation treaty signed in 2025. The Pamir Highway depends on exactly these two crossings.

Torugart and Irkeshtam close for weather and during Chinese public holidays - these are passes above 3,000 metres and their schedule is nothing like that of lowland crossings.

Kyrgyzstan has no direct link to Russia; overland you travel through Kazakhstan.

Bringing a car into Kyrgyzstan

Import is handled at the border with a customs declaration. Kyrgyzstan belongs to the Eurasian Economic Union, so for a car registered in another member state such as Russia the procedure is simplified and no duties are payable.

If the driver is not the owner, a power of attorney is required.

Insurance has to be bought locally; a foreign policy is not valid here, and cover is arranged near the border.

The roads are the defining feature of the trip. The Pamir Highway and the Too-Ashuu and Ala-Bel passes are closed in winter because of avalanche danger, and there is no way around them.

Keep a real reserve of fuel on mountain sections: on the Pamir route there can be two hundred kilometres between filling stations.

Travelling to Kyrgyzstan with a pet

The rabies vaccination is mandatory and must be given no later than 21 days before entry.

Veterinary certificate - travellers from Russia and other Eurasian Economic Union countries carry the simplified Form No. 1, issued by a state veterinary clinic shortly before the trip. If you are travelling from outside the EAEU — including the US, UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand — a different, standard third-country procedure applies instead; this page does not have those details, so check with Kyrgyzstan's veterinary service before you go.

A microchip is not required by the Kyrgyz side, but you will need it on the way back and for the airline.

Parasite treatment is recorded in the veterinary passport.

There is no quarantine if the documents are in order.

Overstaying your visa in Kyrgyzstan

An overstay brings an entry ban with it, and in Kyrgyzstan that stings more than usual: the country already closes entry for 90 days once you have used up your allowance, and a violation adds a ban of its own on top.

You have to count the 180-day window, not the individual trip. The people who get it wrong are usually those who travel often and briefly: each trip on its own fits within the limit, but the total over six months does not.

The fine is issued on departure, when the border officers see your entry dates.

Leaving of your own accord is cheaper than waiting for a document check inside the country: in the first case the matter usually ends with a fine.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
