Libya's land border crossings, neighbour by neighbour:

With Tunisia: Ras Jedir on the coast and Dehiba inland. This is the main route, but the crossings have been closed more than once.

With Egypt: Emsaad–Salloum in the east.

With Algeria, Niger, Chad and Sudan crossings exist, but they run through desert areas controlled by irregular armed groups.

By sea — the ports of Tripoli, Misrata and Benghazi.

The practical conclusion: land routes through the country are not something to plan on, and whether the crossings work depends on the situation and changes without warning.

Driving to Libya

Check the temporary import conditions for Libya before you set off. The period for which a car is let in, and whether a carnet is needed, differ from country to country.

Insurance is bought locally.

An International Driving Permit is required.

Moving around the country carries a direct risk.

Travelling to Libya with a pet

An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.

A rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

An import permit is arranged in advance.

Confirm the vaccination timings, the microchip and quarantine for bringing an animal into Libya before you buy the tickets. It is not the border that turns you back but the carrier — right at the check-in desk.

When the situation is unstable, veterinary services work erratically, and the paperwork takes an unpredictable amount of time.

Overstaying your visa in Libya

A fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid on departure.

The exact amount will be named by the officer as you leave. The rates in Libya have changed more than once, and figures from reference sources cannot be relied on — take plenty of cash to the border.

When the situation is unstable, an overstay is more dangerous than usual: document checks are more frequent and the consequences less predictable.

Extensions are arranged in advance, before your permitted stay runs out.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
