Mauritius: visa and entry rules

What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs

Mauritius's borders: every crossing point

0 land crossings 1 airports

Mauritius is an island, so it has no land borders.

All entry goes through Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport in Plaine Magnien.

Rodrigues is part of the country, so the flight there is domestic and there is no separate border control.

Cruise ships are handled by Port Louis.

Bringing a car into Mauritius

You cannot reach the island under your own steam — there are no land borders.

Tourists travel in rental cars.

Traffic drives on the left.

A licence in Latin script is enough for stays of up to four weeks. Beyond that you need an International Driving Permit or an extension from the Mauritian authorities.

Travelling to Mauritius with a pet

The rules are strict and quarantine does apply — the island protects its own ecosystem.

An import permit is obtained in advance from the veterinary service.

Find out the requirements and timings for import well before the trip: preparing the paperwork for an animal takes weeks.

Overstaying your visa in Mauritius

An overstay is spotted on the way out.

The fine is worked out on departure, and you will hear the figure at the border. In this country it is best to have cash to spare for the exit.

You have to count both the 60 days per entry and the 180 per year — the second limit is noticed later.

For a serious overstay — deportation and an entry ban.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
