What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
Mongolia's land border crossings, grouped by the neighbour they lead to:
Mongolia has only two neighbours: Russia and China.
With Russia: Kyakhta - Altanbulag, the main road crossing on the Ulaanbaatar route; Tashanta - Tsagaannuur in the Altai, the most scenic and a seasonal one; Solovyovsk - Ereentsav in Zabaykalsky Krai.
With China: Zamyn-Uud - Erenhot, which carries the Ulaanbaatar - Beijing railway.
Tashanta does not work all year round - the high Durbet-Daba pass is closed for weather, and in winter the route into Mongolia along the Chuya Highway is impassable.
Kyakhta is the main option for drivers, and it works year-round.
This is a popular direction: the Chuya Highway through Tashanta and the road through Kyakhta are the two main driving routes in from Russia.
Temporary import is handled at the border.
Ask customs how long a car is allowed to stay in Mongolia. The figure changes and general data cannot be relied on.
You need local insurance, which is bought at the border.
Away from the main highways the roads are unsurfaced. Routes across western Mongolia call for a four-wheel drive, and that is no exaggeration: there is no asphalt for hundreds of kilometres.
An International Driving Permit is required.
An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country of departure.
The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.
A microchip is needed for identification.
Check the vaccination deadlines and the quarantine rules for bringing an animal into Mongolia with your country's veterinary service before buying tickets.
A fine is charged for exceeding the permitted period and is paid on departure.
Exactly how much will be determined as you leave. There is no confirming the amount in advance in Mongolia, as the rates change. Keep cash on you and do not book a tight connection.
There is a separate fine for not registering when staying longer than 30 days - that is an offence in its own right.
You need to keep track of both limits: 30 days per trip and 90 per half-year.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
