What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
North Macedonia's land border crossings, by neighbour:
With Serbia: Tabanovce on the Belgrade — Skopje road, the main northern crossing.
With Greece: Bogorodica — Evzoni on the way to Thessaloniki, Medzitlija.
With Bulgaria: Deve Bair towards Sofia, Novo Selo.
With Albania: Kjafasan near Ohrid, Stenje, Blato.
With Kosovo: Blace outside Skopje.
Evzoni is the way out into Schengen, and the queues there are seasonal: in summer the whole flow to the Greek coast goes through it.
Kjafasan links Ohrid with the Albanian coast and is busy in the tourist season.
Tabanovce takes the main flow from the north — from Serbia and, beyond it, Hungary.
A Green Card is compulsory.
The motorways are tolled — the Skopje — Tabanovce and Skopje — Gevgelija sections are paid for at toll points.
Temporary import is recorded with a stamp at the border, for a term matching the permitted length of stay.
Roads in the mountain part are narrow, especially towards Ohrid.
A microchip is compulsory, ISO standard, fitted before the rabies vaccination.
A rabies vaccination — no later than 21 days before entry.
A rabies antibody titre test is required only for pets from a country not on the EU's approved list. The US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK are on the list, so this does not apply to pets travelling from those countries; Russia is one of the countries it does apply to. The test is done no earlier than 30 days after the vaccination.
A veterinary certificate is issued before the trip and endorsed by the state veterinary service.
There is no quarantine if the paperwork is complete.
The fine is issued on departure.
An entry ban is imposed for a substantial overstay; the length is set by the migration service.
The rolling window is a source of mistakes for people going round the Balkans in circles: each country counts its own allowance separately, and North Macedonia's ninety days get used up unnoticed.
Leaving of your own accord is cheaper than waiting for a document check.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
