Pakistan's land border crossings, listed by the neighbours it shares a border with:

With India: Wagah - Attari near Lahore. The only crossing open to tourists, and it works irregularly — the regime depends on relations between the two countries.

With Iran: Taftan - Mirjaveh in the west. The route runs through Balochistan and is unsafe.

With Afghanistan: Torkham and Chaman. Both directions are closed to tourist travel.

With China: Khunjerab on the Karakoram Highway — the highest international road crossing in the world, at about 4,700 metres. It is seasonal and closed by snow in winter.

The flag-lowering ceremony at Wagah is an attraction in its own right, and people travel there specially for it.

The main way in is the international airports of Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore.

Bringing a car into Pakistan

A carnet de passages is required for the temporary import of a vehicle.

Traffic drives on the left.

Khunjerab on the Chinese border is seasonal — the pass is closed for the winter, and that sets the window for a trip along the Karakoram Highway.

Ask customs directly about the temporary import period for Pakistan. General figures go out of date faster than the reference books update them.

An International Driving Permit is required.

Travelling to Pakistan with a pet

An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country of departure.

The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

An import permit is arranged in advance.

Before bringing an animal into Pakistan, check with two authorities: the national veterinary service and your carrier. Failing either of the two lists is enough to be refused.

Overstaying your visa in Pakistan

A fine is charged for exceeding the permitted period and is paid on departure.

The amount is calculated at the moment you leave. Published rates for Pakistan contradict one another and go out of date — count on cash and on an extra hour at the border.

An extension is arranged in advance, before the permitted period runs out.

A serious overstay means deportation and an entry ban.

What else to check before you go

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
