What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
Paraguay's land border crossings, listed by neighbour:
With Brazil: Ciudad del Este — Foz do Iguacu, the Friendship Bridge. One of the busiest crossings in South America, with an enormous flow of shoppers going through it.
With Argentina: Encarnacion — Posadas over the bridge across the Parana; Asuncion — Clorinda in the west.
With Bolivia there is a crossing in the Chaco, little used and difficult.
The triple border at the Iguazu Falls — Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina meet at a single point, and in one day you can find yourself in all three countries.
The country has no access to the sea, and traffic moves along the Parana and Paraguay rivers.
Land routes work with Brazil and Argentina.
Mercosur insurance is valid across the region and is asked for at the crossings.
Check the conditions for temporary import into Paraguay before you set off. The period for which a car is allowed in, and the need for a carnet, differ from country to country.
An International Driving Permit is required.
The Friendship Bridge is overloaded, and at peak times the crossing takes hours — by car especially.
An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.
The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.
Parasite treatment is recorded in the documents.
Confirm the vaccination deadlines, the microchip and the quarantine rules for entry into Paraguay before you buy tickets. It is not the border that turns you back but the carrier — right at the check-in desk.
The fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid on departure.
The exact sum will be named by the officer as you leave. The rates in Paraguay have changed more than once and figures from reference guides cannot be relied on — take plenty of cash to the border.
You have to count a rolling window over a half-year period.
A missing entry stamp counts as a violation — at busy crossings such as the Friendship Bridge you have to go and get it stamped yourself.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
