Qatar's land border crossings, listed by the neighbours it shares a border with:

Qatar has a single land neighbour, Saudi Arabia, and a single crossing to match: Abu Samra in the south.

Abu Samra was closed for four years. From June 2017, when the neighbouring states declared a blockade of Qatar, land traffic stopped completely and the country was supplied only by sea and by air. The crossing reopened in January 2021 after the reconciliation.

Everything else is sea and air. The main flow goes through Hamad airport in Doha.

The single Gulf visa is not working yet. A common document for the six countries is being introduced in stages, with the pilot phase scheduled for the end of 2026. You cannot count on it when planning a trip now.

Driving to Qatar

Overland entry is possible only from the Saudi side through Abu Samra. That means driving yourself to Qatar requires legally crossing Saudi territory first.

Check the rules for the temporary import of a car into Qatar with customs. They change, and general figures do not carry over here.

Insurance is compulsory and is taken out locally.

An International Driving Permit is required.

Travelling to Qatar with a pet

An import permit is required from the Ministry of Agriculture, arranged in advance.

An international-standard microchip is compulsory.

The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

The veterinary certificate is endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country of departure.

Certain dog breeds are not allowed into the country — the ban covers fighting breeds and applies regardless of the paperwork.

Confirm vaccination and test timings with your carrier before buying tickets.

Overstaying your visa in Qatar

A fine is charged for every day beyond the permitted period.

Exactly how much is decided on departure. The sum cannot be confirmed in advance in Qatar, as the rates change. Keep cash and do not book a tight connection.

You will not get out without settling the fine — payment is checked at the airport.

An extension is cheaper than an overstay: you have to approach the immigration service before the thirty days run out, and the stay is then legally extended to ninety.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
