Tajikistan's land border crossings, listed by the neighbours it shares a border with:

With Uzbekistan: Oybek on the Tashkent road, Pakhtaabad and Fotehobod in the Sughd region.
With Kyrgyzstan: Kyzyl-Bel and Bor-Dobo on the Pamir Highway.
With Afghanistan: Nizhny Pyanj, Ishkashim, the bridge at Khorog.
With China: Kulma at the pass, the only one and seasonal.

The Kyrgyz direction is worth checking before you set off. The crossings were closed after the conflict of 2021 and opened after the delimitation treaty of 2025; the whole Pamir Highway depends on them.

Kulma does not work all year round — the pass is above 4,300 metres and is closed in winter.

The Afghan direction is not a tourist one, despite the crossings formally being open.

Driving to Tajikistan

Temporary import is processed at the border with a declaration. Tajikistan is not in the EAEU, so the procedure is the usual one for third countries.

Insurance is bought locally.

The Pamir Highway is not an ordinary road. A large part of it is unsurfaced, the passes are above 4,000 metres and there are few filling stations. For that route you need a reserve of fuel, water and a second spare wheel.

The GBAO permit is checked at posts along the road, not only when entering the region.

Travelling to Tajikistan with a pet

The rabies vaccination is compulsory, no later than 21 days before entry.

A veterinary certificate is issued at a state veterinary clinic before the trip.

A microchip is not a mandatory requirement, but the airline needs one.

Parasite treatment is recorded in the pet passport.

There is no quarantine when the set of documents is complete.

Overstaying your visa in Tajikistan

The fine is issued on departure, when the entry dates are checked.

A serious overstay ends in expulsion with a ban on entering again.

Breaching the GBAO regime is punished separately — being in the region without a valid permit counts as an offence in its own right, not as an addition to the visa one.

Leaving of your own accord is cheaper than waiting for a document check.

What else to check before you go

更新日

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
