全体の状況

Overall: Crime in the kingdom is extremely low and you can walk around at any hour. Islanders are genuinely friendly, but keep the usual basic care over valuables in shared accommodation.

Natural hazards: Tonga sits in a seismically active zone, so pay attention to official tsunami alerts. Between November and April severe storms and tropical cyclones are possible.

The ocean: Currents around the reefs are treacherous for anyone not confident in open water. Wear proper reef shoes to avoid cuts from sharp coral and sea urchins.

Sun: The UV index here is extreme even under cloud. Use high-factor sunscreen without exception, cover up and wear a wide-brimmed hat.

Dogs: There are a lot of stray dogs and they sometimes gather in noisy packs. They rarely bother people, but on an empty street it is simplest to ignore them and walk around.

Health: Tap water quality is questionable, so drink bottled or boiled water only. Make sure your travel insurance covers emergencies properly, and check your own government's travel advisory before you go.

観光客はどう騙されるか

Tonga is Polynesia's only kingdom and was never colonised. Crime against tourists is very low.

Nuku'alofa. Petty theft. Nights are broadly calm, though lighting is scarce.

Taxis. Agree in advance; there are no meters. Fares are low.

Swimming with whales. The main reason to come: from July to October humpback whales arrive off Tonga, and swimming with them is permitted here. Operators are licensed and the number of boats per whale is limited by law. Unlicensed operators exist — check the licence, which is a matter of both law and safety.

Between the islands. Flights and ferries with changing schedules. The ferry to Ha'apai and Vava'u can be overloaded. Leave slack.

Cash. Cards are accepted in hotels; elsewhere you need pa'anga.

罰金や逮捕につながる行為

Sunday is closed constitutionally. Tonga's key feature: Sunday is a day of rest enshrined in the constitution. Shops, restaurants and transport do not operate and commercial activity is prohibited by law. Swimming and sport on Sunday are not the custom and are prohibited in some places. Tourist hotels function, but planning anything for Sunday is pointless.

Dress. Society is conservative. In village and town, shoulders and knees are covered, with swimwear only on resort beaches. Men should not appear shirtless in public — it is fineable.

Swimming with whales. Regulated: licensed operators only, limits on the number of people in the water, minimum distance, and no touching.

Drones. Permission is required.

Drugs. The law is strict.

Photography. Royal sites and ceremonies call for care.

Marine life. Turtles are protected.

健康:予防接種、薬、医療

There is no malaria. Tonga is malaria-free.

Dengue, chikungunya and Zika. Present, with outbreaks.

Vaccinations. Hepatitis A and B, typhoid and tetanus.

Water. Treated in Nuku'alofa, but visitors are better off with bottled. On the islands water is rainwater.

The sea. Reefs and currents. Swimming with whales is physical work in open ocean and requires confidence in the water.

There is no hyperbaric chamber. Critical for divers: evacuation to New Zealand or Fiji. Diving insurance is essential.

Volcanoes and tsunamis. The region is seismically active. The 2022 Hunga Tonga eruption caused a tsunami and covered the country in ash. Know where the nearest high ground is.

Cyclones. The season runs November to April and hits can be devastating.

Healthcare. The hospital in Nuku'alofa is basic and the islands have health posts. Anything serious means evacuation to New Zealand. Insurance with evacuation cover is essential.

Emergency numbers: 911; 922 for police.

警察:どう対応するか

Tonga is among the safest countries in the Pacific. Crime against tourists is essentially absent.

Police. Few in number and correct. English is official alongside Tongan.

Reporting theft. Reports are taken; cases are rare.

At night. Nuku'alofa is calm, though drunken groups appear at weekends after the bars close.

Society. Respect for the royal family and the church underpins local life. Criticism is out of place.

What actually matters. In Tonga the risk comes from the ocean, cyclones, volcanoes and the distance to medical care. The main things for a visitor to learn are Sunday and the dress code: they will open the country more than anything else.

Emergency number is 911.
