Tunisia's land border crossings, listed by the neighbour they lead to:

With Algeria: Babouch near Ain Draham in the north, Hazoua in the south near Tozeur and several crossings in the centre.

With Libya: Ras Jedir on the coast and Dehiba inland. This direction is unstable: the crossings have been closed more than once, and it is not worth planning a route through them.

By sea to Europe there are ferries to Marseille and to the Italian ports of Genoa, Civitavecchia and Palermo. This is the route by which people bring a car into the country.

The main flow is by air, through the airports of Tunis, Enfidha and Djerba.

Bringing a car into Tunisia

The main route is by ferry from Italy or France.

Temporary import is processed at the border, and the vehicle is recorded in your passport: you will not be able to leave without it.

Check the temporary import period for Tunisia with customs. The rules change, and a general figure for the region does not work here.

Insurance is bought locally.

An International Driving Permit is required.

Travelling to Tunisia with a pet

An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.

The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

A microchip is needed to identify the animal.

Check the vaccination timings and quarantine rules for bringing an animal into Tunisia with your country's veterinary service before you buy tickets.

Overstaying your visa in Tunisia

The overstay charge is paid on departure at the airport.

The amount of the fine in Tunisia will only be named at the border. The rates change and it cannot be worked out in advance - keep a reserve of cash for the day you leave.

Extending at the police is cheaper than dealing with the matter at departure.

A serious overstay can lead to an entry ban.

What else to check before you go

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
