What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
Uganda's land border crossings, listed by the neighbour they lead to:
With Kenya: Malaba and Busia on the Kampala - Nairobi highway.
With Rwanda: Katuna - Gatuna on the main road to Kigali; Cyanika by the volcanoes.
With Tanzania: Mutukula on the southern route.
With South Sudan: Elegu - Nimule.
With the DR Congo: Mpondwe by the Rwenzori and Bunagana in the volcano area - this direction depends on the situation and is sometimes closed.
The country has no access to the sea, and all freight goes through Mombasa in Kenya.
Mountainous Bwindi and the volcanoes are border areas, and the gorilla-trekking routes often run along the Congolese and Rwandan frontiers.
Overland routes work with Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania.
Driving is on the left.
Regional COMESA insurance is valid in several East African countries at once and is convenient for a route around the region.
How long the vehicle may stay in the country will be stated when you bring it into Uganda. Check with customs in advance: the periods get revised.
An International Driving Permit is required.
An import permit is required, arranged in advance with the veterinary service.
The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.
An international veterinary certificate is required.
Your country's veterinary service will give you the exact list for bringing an animal into Uganda, and the carrier will add rules of its own. Ask both: without the full set of documents the animal will not be taken on board.
A fine is charged for each day of overstay and is paid on departure.
The fine is calculated as you leave, and you will learn the figure at passport control. It cannot be established in advance in Uganda: the rates get revised and reference sources disagree. Allow for cash and for time.
Extensions are arranged with the immigration service before the visa expires.
A serious overstay means deportation and an entry ban.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
