What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
Uzbekistan's land border crossings, neighbour by neighbour:
With Kazakhstan: Gisht-Kuprik (Zhibek Zholy) near Tashkent - the main one, open around the clock; also Yallama and Tazhen in the west.
With Kyrgyzstan: Dostuk, the way out of the Fergana Valley towards Osh.
With Tajikistan: Oybek on the Tashkent side, Bekabad.
With Turkmenistan: Farap near Bukhara, Khazarasp and Shavat on the Khorezm side.
With Afghanistan: Hairatan near Termez.
The Tashkent direction is the main one. Gisht-Kuprik takes almost the entire flow from Kazakhstan; queues here are normal on public holidays.
The Turkmen crossings require a Turkmenistan visa obtained in advance: you cannot pass through in transit without one, and this is the most common reason for turning back on the approach.
Temporary import is processed at the border with a passenger customs declaration. Uzbekistan is not part of the Eurasian Economic Union, so the procedure is stricter than in Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan.
Keep the declaration until you leave. The car is recorded against your name and you cannot leave without the declaration: it is the very document the car was brought in on.
Insurance has to be bought locally.
A power of attorney is needed if the driver is not the owner.
You cannot transit Turkmenistan without a Turkmen visa.
The rabies vaccination is compulsory, no later than 21 days before entry.
The veterinary certificate is issued by a state veterinary clinic; at the border it is exchanged for a local form.
A microchip is not a compulsory requirement, but the airline will want one, and so will the return journey.
Parasite treatment is recorded in the pet's veterinary passport.
There is no quarantine if the set of documents is complete.
Missing registration is the most common violation, and it comes to light when you leave. The fine is paid at the airport or at the crossing, and you will not be let out until it is.
Overstaying the visa-free period brings a fine and an entry ban; the migration service decides the amount and the length.
The host party is liable too - which is exactly why flat owners usually keep an eye on registration themselves.
Leaving of your own accord is cheaper than waiting for a check inside the country.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
