The country has no land borders — it is a group of islands.

All entry is by air and by sea. Bauerfield International Airport is in Port Vila.

There are few flights, and they shape a trip more than the visa rules do. Most countries in the region are reached via Fiji, Australia or New Zealand, and connections run only once every few days.

Travel between the islands within the country is by light aircraft and boats, with no border formalities involved.

Cruise ships call at Port Vila and Luganville.

Bringing a car into Vanuatu

You cannot drive here under your own steam — there are no land borders.

Tourists get around in rental cars, and the fleet is small: it is worth booking ahead.

Traffic drives on the right.

A local temporary driving permit is often required — it is issued on the spot for a small fee.

Check the procedure for importing a car into Vanuatu before you set off. It differs from the neighbouring countries and changes from time to time.

Travelling to Vanuatu with a pet

The rules are strict: island states protect their own ecosystems, and biosecurity here is tougher than immigration control.

An import permit is arranged in advance, and the requirements depend on the country you are travelling from.

A rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

Quarantine applies.

Start the paperwork for bringing an animal into Vanuatu a month ahead. Find out the timings and requirements straight away — there is no catching up just before the flight.

Overstaying your visa in Vanuatu

A fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid on departure.

The amount is calculated at the moment you leave. The published rates for Vanuatu contradict one another and go out of date — count on paying in cash and on an extra hour at the border.

An extension is arranged in advance, before the permitted stay expires.

Infrequent flights are a risk in their own right. Overstaying here happens not through ill intent but because the next plane is four days away: plan your departure with time to spare.

What else to check before you go

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
