Yemen's land border crossings, neighbour by neighbour:

With Saudi Arabia: Al Tuwal and Al Wadiah. The border is closed because of the war.

With Oman: Shahan - Sarfait in the east. The only direction that has worked relatively steadily.

By sea, the ports of Aden and Hodeidah, whose operation depends on the situation.

Socotra is reached by air - flights come from the UAE, and it is effectively a route separate from the mainland.

The practical conclusion: land routes into the country do not work, and air links are limited.

Bringing a car into Yemen

Check the carnet requirement and the maximum import period for Yemen before you set off. These two points are what most often turns a car back at the border.

Insurance has to be bought locally.

An International Driving Permit is required.

Travelling around the mainland carries a direct risk to life.

Travelling to Yemen with a pet

An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.

The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

An import permit is arranged in advance.

Check the vaccinations, the microchip and the quarantine rules for bringing an animal into Yemen case by case. The general rules of the region do not work here, and an animal without papers is turned back at departure.

With the situation unstable the veterinary services work erratically, and the paperwork takes an unpredictable amount of time.

Overstaying your visa in Yemen

A fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid when you leave.

The fine is worked out as you leave the country, and it cannot be calculated in advance. Rates in Yemen change and there is no single published scale. Cash at the border is essential.

With the situation unstable, an overstay is more dangerous than usual: document checks are more frequent and the consequences less predictable.

Extensions are arranged in advance, before your stay runs out.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
