India's land border crossings, listed by neighbour:

With Nepal: Sunauli — Bhairahawa, Raxaul — Birganj, Kakarbhitta in the east. The route is open and well used.

With Pakistan: Wagah — Attari near Amritsar, the only crossing. It works irregularly and depends on relations between the two countries.

With Bangladesh: Petrapole — Benapole, the main one on the eastern route.

With Bhutan: Phuentsholing.

With Myanmar: Moreh — Tamu.

There are no land crossings open to tourists with China — the border in the Himalayas is disputed and closed.

The e-visa does not work at every crossing — at land crossings it is accepted only at a limited number of them, and an overland route from Nepal has to be checked in advance.

Driving to India

A carnet de passages is mandatory for temporary vehicle import.

The e-visa is accepted at a limited number of land crossings — for a road route this is the first thing to find out.

The main route in is from Nepal via Sunauli or Raxaul.

Traffic drives on the left.

An International Driving Permit is required.

You will be told how long the car may stay in the country when you bring it into India. Check with customs in advance: the periods are revised.

Travelling to India with a pet

You need an import permit, arranged in advance.

An international-standard microchip is mandatory.

The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

You need an international veterinary certificate.

Imports are limited by number: the rules are written for someone relocating with an animal rather than for a holiday trip, and it is hard for a tourist to bring a pet in.

Check the timings for bringing an animal into India with your country's veterinary service before you buy tickets.

Overstaying your visa in India

A fine accrues for staying beyond the validity of your visa and is paid on departure.

The fine is calculated on departure, and you will learn the figure only at passport control. There is no finding it out in India in advance: the rates are revised, and reference sources disagree. Allow for cash and for time.

An e-visa cannot be extended on the spot, so the only lawful way out is to leave on time.

A serious overstay means deportation and an entry ban.

What else to check before you go

更新日

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
