What you need to get in, how long you may stay, and what an overstay costs
Suriname's land border crossings, listed by neighbour:
With Guyana: South Drain — Moleson Creek, a ferry crossing over the Corentyne river. There is no bridge.
With French Guiana: Albina — Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, also a ferry, across the Maroni river. On the far side is the territory of France and the European Union, and a Schengen visa is needed to enter it.
With Brazil there is no land road: the border runs through country that is hard to cross.
Both working borders are river ferries, and their timetables depend on the water and the weather.
The main way in is Johan Pengel airport outside Paramaribo.
The country has no land bridges — both borders are ferry crossings.
Traffic drives on the left, as in neighbouring Guyana.
Ask customs directly about the temporary import period for Suriname. General figures go out of date faster than the reference guides update them.
Insurance is bought locally.
The ferry to Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni leads into EU territory, where European rules apply.
An import permit is required, arranged in advance with the veterinary service.
The rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.
An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.
Confirm the vaccination deadlines, the microchip and the quarantine rules for entry into Suriname before you buy tickets — the carrier will not let the animal on board without the full set.
The fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid on departure.
The amount is calculated at the moment you leave. The published rates for Suriname contradict one another and go out of date — count on cash and an extra hour at the border.
An extension is arranged at the immigration service before the permitted stay expires, not after.
A serious overstay means deportation and an entry ban.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
