O que é a carta internacional e quando te salva
A carta de condução internacional não é uma carta à parte, mas a tradução oficial da tua. Só vale junto com o original e emite-se num dia.
Duas convenções
Há dois formatos: a Convenção de Viena de 1968 e a de Genebra de 1949. O formato que cada país reconhece determina se a tua carta serve — o Japão, por exemplo, só aceita o de Genebra.
A categoria A decide tudo
O erro clássico sobre duas rodas: alugar uma scooter com a carta B. Na Tailândia, Indonésia e Bali é a causa mais comum de multas e, depois de um acidente, o seguro simplesmente não paga, nem a ti nem a terceiros.
Até 125 cc na Europa
Na maioria dos países da UE podes conduzir uma scooter de 125 cc com a carta B ao fim de três anos. Fora da Europa essa facilidade normalmente não existe: ou categoria A ou nada.
Condução à esquerda
Reino Unido, Irlanda, Chipre, Malta, Japão, Tailândia, Indonésia, Índia, África do Sul, Austrália e Nova Zelândia conduzem à esquerda. De mota é mais perigoso do que de carro: nas curvas e nos cruzamentos o corpo volta sozinho à faixa habitual.
É preciso carta internacional no estrangeiro
Depende do país e do aspeto da tua carta. As cartas recentes com transliteração latina são aceites na Geórgia, Turquia, EUA, México e em boa parte da América Latina. No Sudeste Asiático, nos EAU e na América do Sul é quase sempre exigida a internacional — sem ela, alugar é ilegal.
A mota é outra história. A categoria B não habilita a conduzir mota em lado nenhum, exceto na Europa com o limite de 125 cc. Os aluguers na Tailândia e em Bali entregam scooters a qualquer um, mas isso é o negócio deles, não uma isenção legal: a polícia multa o condutor e o seguro não paga.
A carta internacional é emitida com base na carta nacional, vale três anos e custa pouco. Tratar disso antes da viagem fica mais barato do que uma única multa no local.
