Nalanda Mahavihara

Attraction·Nalanda·India

Nalanda Mahavihara is the archaeological remains of a Buddhist monastic and learning centre that operated from the third century BCE to the thirteenth century CE. It was one of South Asia’s earliest and longest-running centres of higher learning, and its organization influenced later monastic institutions across the region. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The excavated complex contains brick viharas used as residences and teaching spaces, chaitya temples, stupas and shrines. Successive building layers show how the layout and religious architecture evolved. Finds in stone, metal and stucco add evidence of the monastic community and its artistic traditions.
