How to read the rating

The rating is background, not a verdict. A dangerous country has calm neighbourhoods, and in the safest one your wallet still goes missing if you doze off on the metro.

Which countries are safe to travel to

Safety is three different things that usually get blurred into one. First, violent crime — it decides whether you can walk around town in the evening. Second, theft: pickpockets in Barcelona and Paris work exactly where the tourists stand, and that says nothing about the country as a whole. Third, the background: politics, healthcare quality and whether an ambulance actually arrives.

The practical minimum before a trip: save the local emergency number, find out whether tap water is drinkable, and ask your host which areas to avoid after dark. Those three cover most of what actually goes wrong for travellers.

On insurance: in countries rated 3 and below, healthcare for a foreigner is expensive, and a policy without adventure cover will not pay out after a scooter crash — the single most common incident involving tourists in Asia.

Ratings are based on open crime data and foreign-ministry advisories. Conditions change — check current travel advice before you go.
