Weight classes: why everyone talks about 250 grams

In almost every country the requirements depend not on the model but on the take-off weight. The thresholds differ, but the logic is the same everywhere: the lighter the drone, the less paperwork.

Where you can fly a drone — and where it gets seized at customs

A drone on a trip means great footage but also a real risk of losing your gear. The rules differ radically: in Australia and New Zealand recreational flying needs no registration at all, Japan registers drones from 100 g, and in Morocco or Egypt the drone is taken at the airport and not always returned.

The key things to check before you fly out: whether you can bring a drone in at all, whether registration is required and from what weight, and whether a pilot test and liability insurance are needed. In some countries registration takes weeks and requires a local phone or tax number — start early.

Check local bans separately: national parks, historical sites, temples, beach resorts and city centres are often closed to drones even where flying is generally allowed.
