There is only one land neighbour, the Dominican Republic, with which Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola.

There are four crossings: Ouanaminthe - Dajabon in the north, Belladere - Elias Pina in the centre, Malpasse - Jimani by the lake, Anse-a-Pitre - Pedernales in the south.

The crossings work erratically. The Dominican side closes them depending on the situation, and the regime changes.

The main airport is Port-au-Prince, whose operation has also been interrupted; Cap-Haitien in the north serves as an alternative.

By sea there is the Labadee cruise call, a formally closed enclave where ships put in without passengers going out into the rest of the country.

Driving to Haiti

Land entry is only possible from the Dominican Republic, and the opening pattern of the crossings changes.

Check the rules on temporary vehicle import into Haiti with customs. They change, and general figures do not carry over here.

An International Driving Permit is required.

Moving around the country by car carries risks, and this is not about formalities but about the situation on the roads.

Travelling to Haiti with a pet

An import permit is required, arranged in advance with the veterinary service.

A rabies vaccination must be valid on the date of entry.

An international veterinary certificate is required, endorsed by the state veterinary service of the country you are leaving.

Put the papers for import into Haiti together before the tickets. It is the carrier who checks them, and if anything is missing you are turned away at check-in.

Overstaying your visa in Haiti

A fine is charged for exceeding your permitted stay and is paid on departure.

The amount of the fine in Haiti will only be named at the border. The tariffs change and it cannot be worked out in advance - keep a reserve of cash for the day you leave.

Extensions are arranged at the immigration service before your stay expires, not after.

A serious overstay means deportation and an entry ban.

Entry rules change faster than anything else on this site, and they change without notice. We cross-check every page against several sources and state the date it was verified, but that does not replace the main step: before you travel, check an official source — the country’s consulate, its immigration service or its e-visa portal. Especially if more than a couple of months have passed since our check.
