Description

Kota Tinggi is a town and the administrative centre of its district in Johor, southern Malaysia. It stands by the Johor River, about 42 kilometres from Johor Bahru. The town is a practical starting point for exploring a large district: roads lead from here to waterfalls and forest reserves, historic riverside settlements, the east coast and the Desaru resort area. In town, visitors can explore Kota Tinggi Museum, which covers Johor’s history, and several heritage sites connected with the sultanate. The nearby village of Kampung Makam contains the mausoleums of Sultan Mahmud and Bendahara Tun Habab. Kota Tinggi Waterfall lies north of the centre, with cascades and natural pools; official tourism sources put it about 16 kilometres from town. Panti Forest Reserve offers routes through lowland tropical forest, while Gunung Panti and Gunung Muntahak are hiking options that require preparation and a local check of conditions. The district is also known for evening cruises on the Johor River to watch fireflies. On the coast, beaches include Desaru, Tanjung Balau and Tanjung Sedili, but they are better treated as separate trips. Intercity transport connects Kota Tinggi with Johor Bahru; check current schedules before travelling. A car or arranged transfer is usually more practical for reaching the waterfall, forest trails and heritage sites spread across the district.
