Surakarta is the city’s official name; Solo is the familiar short form used by residents and visitors. Located in Central Java, it is one of the centres of Javanese court culture, crafts and trade. Its character comes through in the historic districts, from palace compounds to workshops and shops where batik is still made.
Palaces, markets and batik
A central itinerary can include the Kasunanan Palace and Pura Mangkunegaran. The latter remains an active cultural complex, so check visitor rules and which areas are open before you go. For the craft tradition, head to Kauman or Laweyan, where traditional houses sit alongside batik workshops and shops. Markets and streets around the centre add a view of everyday city life.
