Adalaj ni Vav is a fifteenth-century stepwell in the village of Adalaj, north of Ahmedabad and close to Gandhinagar. It served both as a source of water and as a public space: flights of steps descend through several underground levels, where people could find relief from the heat and reach water during dry periods. Five storeys are supported by carved stone columns and beams. The passages frame views into an octagonal well shaft, while openings above bring light and air into the structure. Its ornament combines Indian religious imagery with Islamic geometric forms, a distinctive feature of Gujarat’s architecture in this period. Three entrances converge on the central well, making the building feel like a connected route down through the levels rather than a simple stairway to water. Take time to notice the carving on the columns, lintels and walls between landings. Adalaj ni Vav is easy to include in a road trip from Ahmedabad or Gandhinagar alongside other heritage sites in the region. The steps and passages are below ground, so wear shoes with a firm grip and check the current visitor rules before travelling. The monument is compelling not only as an engineering solution for storing water, but also as an example of how public infrastructure in medieval Gujarat became expressive architecture.
