Gandhinagar is the capital of Gujarat and a planned city in western India. Its administrative and residential districts are arranged in sectors, while broad roads and green spaces give it a quieter pace than neighbouring Ahmedabad. The city is home to state institutions, museums and cultural centres. Dandi Kutir explores the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, and the Akshardham temple complex is among the city’s best-known architectural landmarks. A major historic site nearby is Adalaj ni Vav, the five-storey stepwell located in the Gandhinagar district and about 19 kilometres north of Ahmedabad. Gandhinagar therefore works well as part of a route through central Gujarat’s heritage sites. Trips between the city, Adalaj and Ahmedabad are generally planned by road or local transport, so allow for travel time between separate attractions. A day is enough for an introduction to the city, while visitors who want to see its museums and religious sites should check each venue’s opening arrangements before setting out.
