The Alappuzha backwaters form part of Kerala’s network of coastal lagoons and canals. Freshwater lakes, rice fields and coconut groves connect through channels to Vembanad Lake and the Arabian Sea. Traditional Kerala houseboats, or kettuvallams, travel along the canals and lake routes past villages and farmland.
A houseboat journey offers a view of life in the waterside settlements and the working landscape of the lagoons. Routes vary in length and cover different parts of the network, with departures from Alappuzha and nearby jetties.
