Description

Alappuzha, also known as Alleppey, is a coastal town in Kerala between the Arabian Sea and Vembanad Lake. A network of canals and lagoons links inland waterways with the coast. Its waterways and bridges have earned the town the nickname “Venice of the East.” The main visitor experience is a journey through the backwaters on traditional Kerala houseboats, known as kettuvallams. Villages, rice fields and coconut groves line the canals, while the town’s coast has a long promenade and beach. Boat trips reveal the settlements and working landscape of the lagoon region.
