Aru Valley lies about twelve kilometres upstream from Pahalgam, in the upper Lidder River valley of southern Kashmir. The small settlement is surrounded by meadows, coniferous forest, and mountain slopes, with the Aru River flowing through it as a tributary of the Lidder. The valley is a destination for easy walks as well as a starting point for several longer treks, including routes to Tarsar and Marsar lakes, Kolahoi Glacier, and the Lidderwat meadows. A road from Pahalgam makes the lower valley accessible without a demanding hike, while routes farther into the mountains require proper preparation.

Summer brings green pasture and forested hillsides; autumn gives the landscape more muted colours. Local paths cross grazing areas and patches of woodland, and become slippery after rain. Mountain weather can change quickly. A short visit can focus on the river and valley floor, while a trek to the high-altitude lakes requires several days and advance checks on trail conditions.

Aru sits at roughly 2,400 metres, so visitors unused to altitude should increase exertion gradually. Arrange transport, accommodation, and any guide services in Pahalgam or in the village, and confirm what is operating during your travel dates. Before a longer trek, check local restrictions and the forecast, carry water and warm layers, and leave time to return safely. Aru is easily combined with Pahalgam, but the valley and the town are separate stops rather than one attraction.
