Central Mosque of Almaty

The Central Mosque of Almaty stands in the lower part of the city, at the corner of Pushkin and Makatayev streets, and serves as the main mosque of the metropolis. The building was finished in 1999 on the site of the earlier city mosque; it is faced with pale stone and finished with a turquoise dome about twenty metres across. A minaret about forty-seven metres high rises beside it, and the call to prayer is read from it. Up to seven thousand people fit inside at once, so on Fridays and holidays the square before the entrance fills completely. In the evening the dome and the arcades are lit, and the mosque is clearly seen from the neighbouring streets.
