Dataran Lang, or Eagle Square, is a waterfront plaza beside Kuah’s ferry terminal. Its focal point is a monumental red-backed sea eagle with its wings spread as if about to take flight. The name means “Eagle Square”, and the bird also appears in a local explanation of Langkawi’s name: “lang” refers to an eagle, while “kawi” describes a reddish-brown colour. The sculpture is positioned to be seen from the water as ferries approach the island. For many visitors arriving by sea, it is among the first landmarks they recognise, and it has become one of Langkawi’s defining public symbols.

The square is laid out for an unhurried waterfront walk, with ornamental ponds, bridges, covered terraces, brick barrel-vaulted arcades and views across the bay. It is an open public space rather than an indoor museum, so it fits naturally into a walk around central Kuah. The ferry terminal and Lagenda Park are nearby; together they form part of a heritage route that also includes Al-Hana Mosque, the old town and the Kuah River. A brief stop is enough to see the sculpture, although the bay and the changing light make it worth slowing down. In daylight, the eagle’s red-brown surface and feather detail are easy to appreciate; after dark, illumination gives the plaza a different character. If you arrive by ferry, Eagle Square can be visited on foot before checking in or while waiting to leave. Other Langkawi beaches and nature attractions lie well beyond town, so arrange transport separately for those trips.
